A sequencer type controller but with lots of different functionality and ways of trigger different things over time. Designed purely as a hardware controller for which it is possible to write custom software and as such use the controller in any way you like. Presumably some pre-written software is available for quickstart projects and practice. Very similar to the Yamaha Tenori-on but I've been told by a colleague (Ianis Lallemand) that the Monome was in fact released first and as such is the original device. Not sure how the two devices differ exactly, if at all, except for some design concepts such as the Tenori-on model available with two screens in order to allow the audience to see the sequencing being performed in an attempt to make the instrument for engaging, some thing I'm beginning to feel that for live performance at least is incredibly important for a dmi.
